Making and Receiving Calls

Use the browser or Orbit softphone for calls, transfers, conferences, parking, and retrieval.

Overview

Use the Lightspeed Voice softphone in your browser or Orbit desktop app to place and answer calls. Calls can also be handled with a desk phone or LS Orbit mobile. This guide and video focus on the browser and desktop softphone.

Before You Begin

Sign in with your Lightspeed Voice credentials. Make sure your microphone and speakers are available. Follow the browser setup guide for microphone permissions or the Orbit desktop guide for installation.

Select Audio Devices and Caller ID

Open the softphone's gear icon and select your microphone and speaker. Choose your outbound Caller ID at the top of the softphone if more than one number is available.

Make and Answer Calls

Enter a phone number or search for a contact to place a call. Answer an inbound call from the softphone when the incoming call appears. If a desk phone and softphone share your extension, either can answer that extension's call.

In-Call Controls

Use Mute, Hold, Transfer, Conference, and the recording controls as needed. Call Transcription is available when NOVA and the appropriate permissions are enabled.

Transfer a Call

Open Transfer and select the destination, such as an extension, queue, ring group, voicemail, or parking lot. Complete the transfer from the call controls. You can also drag and drop an active call onto another user in the Switchboard.

Start a Conference

Add another call, then use the conference controls to merge the calls. You can remain in the conversation or use the conference option that leaves the other participants connected.

Park and Retrieve a Call

  1. During the call, dial *27 to send it to an available parking spot.
  2. Listen for the announced parking number and locate the call in the Switchboard's Park section.
  3. Retrieve the parked call by dialing its parking number or clicking it in the Switchboard.

Parking holds a call in a shared location so another team member can pick it up.

Orbit Desktop Options

Orbit offers Mini Mode for a compact view and Always on Top to keep the phone visible over other windows. Its status tools let you change availability or clock in and out.

Practice with Your Trainer

Place and answer a test call, use hold and mute, transfer the call, start a conference, and park and retrieve a call using your office's workflow.
